Let’s face it those of us with arthritis, let alone any chronic illness don’t always have it easy.
We wake up every morning not knowing what will hurt, what will be inflamed, and what may stop us from conquering the day as we would see fit. (Modifications for the win).
But bad days don’t need to define you. You will have bad days, good days, and in-between days. The important thing is to be mindful to not get into what I like to call, ‘tunnel vision syndrome.’ This is when you only focus on the bad that it eventually starts to create a life of its own.
I’ll be honest, when I am having a bad day all I want to do is lay around in my pajamas and have a Netflix binge. I have done that many times and don’t feel bad about it. I think it’s important to dedicate yourself those days because sometimes your body needs you to slow down and have rest. On other days, we simply cannot put ourselves to physically do something. In these moments, it may feel as if arthritis is slaying you and sometimes it very well may be doing just that. But that does not mean it needs to win the slaying battle.
For some, positive affirmations may not be their cup of tea and others may find that it doesn’t help them at all. That’s ok!
I know when I am in a flare, repeating these affirmations isn’t going to magically take away the inflammation in my joints, let alone the joint damage that has occurred from my illness these past 15 years. Medication, various lifestyle changes, and surgery will. While I wish it could be that easy, the reality is it isn’t. But that doesn’t mean that having a positive attitude towards life at times is bad. What it comes down to is balance. If you are having a bad day or feeling down because you can’t do something the way you want to, it’s important to not neglect those feelings. Write them down, cry, talk to someone you trust, or if affirmations are your thing repeating these can help you feel less stressed, calmer, and mabye more empowered.
Below are some morning affirmations I created to slay arthritis when I feel it’s getting me down. Give it a try if you like. Enjoy!

I love this Effie. I’ve used affirmations over meditation for many years. This along with setting intentions has been my survival through 29 years of this disease.
Thank you, Maria! I agree with you, setting intentions and meditation is something I do as well, along with affirmations. It has helped me a lot, glad to hear it has helped you too! xoxo
I am a chiropractor but also a best friend. I have been trying to help my best friend with arthritic knees today in clinic. I am going to forward this as it explains beautifully the need to appreciate that mind to body connection. Thank you
